Early Chinese in Sonoma Valley presented by Peter Meyerhof

February 27 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Early Chinese of Sonoma ValleyPeter Meyerhof will discuss the forgotten history of the Chinese residents of the Sonoma Valley in the 19th and early 20th century. Contemporary records and oral histories show just how significant their contribution was to the Valley. At their peak in the 1880s, the Chinese represented 1/4 to 1/3 of the entire population. Almost all were single men who were ineligible for citizenship and as a result could not vote or own land. On the one hand they were considered by many to be extremely reliable and indispensable to the economy, especially in the wine industry, yet others regarded them with suspicion and distrust because of their different culture and ability to outcompete the other workers. Dr. Meyerhof will show exactly where they lived and worked as well as discuss the lives of many individual Chinese people who contributed to the Valley as we know it today in spite of all obstacles in their path.
