In a Zoom presentation November 9th at 7 pm Dr. Amy Brady discusses her book ‘Ice: From Mixed Drinks to Skating Rinks–a Cool History of a Hot Commodity’

Ice is everywhere: in gas stations, in restaurants, in hospitals, and in our homes. Americans think nothing of dropping a few ice cubes into tall glasses of tea to ward off the heat of a hot summer day or pressing them tenderly in a cloth to a child’s bruised or feverish skin. It’s been touted as the secret to the perfect cocktail; the answer to perfect skin; the cure for everything from anxiety to cancer—a veritable panacea of all of life’s ills. So when a heat wave accompanied by rolling blackouts struck award-winning journalist and historian Amy Brady’s home several years ago, prompting her and her family to find refuge at a nearby gas station, she never thought twice about whether or not ice on demand would be available on an oppressively warm summer day. It was only as she filled a tall cup with ice cubes that she began to wonder how—and why—it became such a necessary amenity as to be readily available on every corner of America . . . and to consider what aspects of our society just might melt away as the planet warms.

Brady would spend the next two and a half years researching the rise of this once revolutionary product, research that would ultimately form the basis for her nonfiction debut, ICE: From Mixed Drinks to Skating Rinks—a Cool History of a Hot Commodity (G. P. Putnam’s Sons; On Sale: June 6, 2023).
